Winner of the unofficial world title was GAETAN BOUCHER, Ste-Foy, Que., who also set world marks in 500 m, 1000 m, and 1500 m. Second place in the overall standings went to LOUIS GRENIER, also of Ste-Foy. CATHY TURNBULL, Regina, was third overall in the women’s events.

The outstanding Canadian was NANCY GARAPICK, Halifax, who won both the 200 freestyle and 200 individual medley, finshed second in 400 individual medley, and was third in 200 butterfly. Another double winner was ANNE GAGNON, Beauport, Que., in 100 and 200 breaststroke. GAIL AMUNDRUD, Vancouver, was second in 200 freestyle.

NCAA SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Cambridge, Mass., March

Top Canadians were PETER SZMIDT, Pointe Claire, who was second in 500 freestyle; WADE FLEMONS, West Vancouver, second in 200 backstroke; and STEVE PICKELL, also of West Vancouver, third in 100 backstroke.

The Canadian team won the competition, taking the women’s division and finishing second to Brazil in the men’s. LOUIS SANTERRE, Montréal, was the gold medallist in 82 kg. DOUG YEATS, also of Montréal, took the gold medal in 68 kg.

WENDY QUIRK, Edmonton, was second in 200 m butterfly and third in 200 m freestyle. Another Edmonton swimmer, GRAHAM SMITH, was second in 200 m individual medley and third in 200 m breaststroke. ANNE JARDIN, Pointe Claire, was second in 200 m freestyle and third in 50 m freestyle. Second in 400 m individual medley went to ALEX BAUMANN, Sudbury, and PETER SZMIDT was third in 200 m freestyle.

OLYMPIC BASKETBALL QUALIFYING TOURNAMENT

Canada won the silver medal and qualified for the 1980 Summer Olympics with a 5-1 record, losing only to the gold medal team from Puerto Rico. Argentina took the bronze. JAY TRIANO, Niagara, Ont., was the tournament’s high scorer while JIM ZOET, Port Perry, Ont., led in rebounds and LEO RAUTINS, Toronto, recorded the most assists.

UCLA INVITATIONAL TRACK MEET

First place in 200 m went to ANGELLA TAYLOR, Toronto, in 22.9. In the high jump, MILT OTTEY, Agincourt, Ont., finished second with a leap of 2.13 m. Third place finishers were ANNE MACKIE-MORELLI, Vancouver, in 800 m and BRIT MCROBERTS, Coquitlam, B.C., in 1500 m.
