AUSTRALIAN OPEN SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Brisbane, February

CHERYL GIBSON set an Australian record in winning the 400m individual medley in 4:56.0. She added a silver medal in 200m individual medley and a bronze in 100m backstroke. ROBIN CORSIGLIA took the gold medal in 200m breaststroke and the silver in 100m breaststroke. WENDY QUIRK had bronze medals in 100 and 200m freestyle, and 100m butterfly. Other medallists were CHRISTINE HODSON, bronze in both 100m and 200m breaststroke, and NANCY GARAPICK, bronze in 200m individual medley. The team of Gibson, Corsiglia, Quirk, and Garapick set a new Australian record to win the 400m medley relay in 4:24.52.

LADIES’ WORLD ALL ROUND SPEED SKATING CHAMPIONSHIP

Helsinki, March

SYLVIA BURKA, top Canadian performer at the championships, won a bronze medal in 1000m, and finished sixth overall.

PATTY BALZ took the bronze medal in women’s individual foil.

NORTH AMERICAN CROSS COUNTRY SKI CHAMPIONSHIPS

Lake Placid, March

Canadian women dominated the events, with JOAN GROOTHUYSEN first in 10km. SHIRLEY FIRTH and ESTHER MILLER were second and third respectively. Canada’s second victory came in 5km with Firth finishing on top and Groothuysen a close second. The team added another victory in the relay. Second place in men’s 3 x 10km relay went to the Canadian team of DOUG GODWER, HANS SKINSTAD, and PIERRE VEZINA. Skinstad took second place in 15km.

BENITO JUAREZ SHOOTING COMPETITIONS

Mexico City, March

Canada placed third overall behind the USA and Mexico, winning 10 individual medals. Gold medal winner was TOM GUINN in air pistol. Silver medallists were: Guinn, free pistol; HANS ADLHOCH, free rifle; MYRNA HERBERT, skeet; BONNIE COLES, trap: KIAN Mc-CALDON, skeet; and JIM KUTTAI, air pistol. Bronze medals went to WAYNE RICHEY, free rifle, and GEORGE LEARY, trap. In team competition, Canada took one gold, two silver, and three bronze medals.

UNITED STATES JUNIOR ALPINE SKI CHAMPIONSHIPS

Sun Valley, March

ANN BLACKBURN won the slalom event with a combined two-run time of 1:1.39. First place in giant slalom went to LONI KLETTL, with Blackburn taking third.

CANADIAN WINTER SHORT COURSE SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

New Westminster, March

STEPHEN BADGER set a world’s best time in 400m freestyle and three Canadian records in 100m and 200m freestyle, and 200m butterfly. WENDY QUIRK and BILL SAWCHUK also set world’s best times in 100m butterfly and 200m individual medley respectively. Canadian records were set by NANCY GARAPICK in 200m individual medley and by Quirk in 400m freestyle.

AIAW SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Durham, N.C., March

GAIL AMUNDRUD captured first place in 100 and 200 yd. freestyle and CHERYL GIBSON won the 200 yd. backstroke event. Third place in 100 yd. butterfly went to SUSAN SLOAN.

NCAA SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Long Beach, March

GRAHAM SMITH took the gold medal in 200 yd. breaststroke and was second in 100 yd. breaststroke.

INTERNATIONAL DUAL INVITATIONAL TRACK AND FIELD MEET

Montreal, March

Canada edged Italy by a narrow nine point margin to win the meet. PATTY LOVEROCK, 60m; HUGH FRASER, 60m; DICK MOSS, 880m; DEBBIE CAMPBELL, 400m; and BRUCE ROBERTS, 400m, all took first place. Silver medals went to CHANTAL BRISEBOIS and PAT FOGARTY in 60m; CARMEN IONESCO, shot put; CLAUDE FERRAGNE, high jump; and PAUL CRAIG, 1500m.

JUNIOR WORLD FIGURE SKATING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Mégève, France, March

Canada captured the world junior title on the strength of gold medal performances by DENNIS COI and the pairs team of BARBARA UNDERHILL and PAUL MARTINI. The dance team of KELLY JOHNSON and KRIS BARBER took second place.

COCA COLA SWIM MEET

Leeds, March

A youthful Canadian team placed fourth overall, winning five medals. Gold medals went to ROB GRUNDISON in 200m individual medley and CAM HENNING in 200m backstroke. ROB WALLENIUS took the silver medal in 200m backstroke. Third place finishers were SUZANNE KWASNY in 200m backstroke and Wallenius in 200m individual medley.

St. Luis, Argentina, March

The Canadian team defeated the host nation by a score of 27-8 to win the international tournament.

Tokyo, April

PHILIP DELASALLE took the gold medal in the horizontal bar event and added a silver in the rings. Canada’s other medallist was DIANA CARNEGIE who won the silver in balance beam.

BRITISH OPEN JUDO CHAMPIONSHIPS

London, April

KEVIN DOHERTY won the bronze medal in under 71kg. out of a field of 78.

L’épreuve du 10km fut dominée par les Canadiennes, grâce à JOAN GROOTHUYSEN, première, SHIRLEY FIRTH et ESTHER MILLER seconde et troisième respectivement. Une seconde victoire par les Canadiennes fut enregistrée au 5km, avec Firth en première place, suivie de près par Groothuysen. L’équipe remporta également le relais. Chez les hommes, l’équipe canadienne de DOUG GOWDER, HANS SKINSTAD et PIERRE VEZINA se classa seconde au relais 3 x 10km. Skinstad prit la deuxième place au 15km.

Le Canada se classe troisième, derrière les Etats-Unis et le Mexique, remportant 10 médailles individuelles. TOM GUINN se mérita la médaille d’or au pistolet à air, alors que des médailles d’argent furent décernées à Guinn, au pistolet libre; HANS ADLHOCH, à la carabine libre, MYRNA HERBERT, au skeet, BONNIE COLES, à la fosse olympique, KIAN McCALDON, au skeet: et JIM KUTTAI, au pistolet à air. Quant à WAYNE RICHEY, carabine libre, et GEORGE LEARY, fosse olympique, ils remportèrent des médailles de bronze. Au total par équipe, les Canadiens amassèrent une médaille d’or, deux d’argent et trois de bronze.

Le Canada remporta la rencontre par une faible avance de neuf points sur l’Italie. Des premières place allèrent à PATTY LOVEROCK, au 60m, HUGH FRASER, 60m, DICK MOSS, 800m, DEBBIE CAMPBELL, 400m et BRUCE ROBERTS, au 400m. Des médailles de bronze furent décernées à CHANTAL BRISEBOIS et PAT FOGARTY au 60m, CARMEN IONESCO, au lancer du poids, CLAUDE FERRAGNE, au saut en hauteur et PAUL CRAIG, au 1500m.

L’équipe canadienne remporta les honneurs de ce tournoi international par une victoire de 27-8 sur l’équipe argentine.

PHILIPPE DELASALLE remporta une médaille d’or aux barres parallèles et une médaille d’argent aux anneaux. La Canadienne DIANA CARNEGIE se mérita la médaille d’argent à la poutre d’équilibre.
