CHRISTMAS JUMPING TOURNAMENT

St. Moritz, December

Tauno Kayhko of Thunder Bay came first in a field of more than 90 competitors in the first international ski jumping meet of the season.

NORTH AMERICAN LUGE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Lake Placid, December

The Canadian team placed six athletes in the top ten in a field of 80. LARRY ARBUTHNOT won the singles event and paired with MARK JENSEN to win the doubles. JENSEN took third place in the singles as did PIERRE PACQUETTE and SERGE HEBERT in doubles.

N.O.C. SWIM MEET

East Berlin, December

CHERYL GIBSON led the Canadian contingent at this major international competition winning 200m backstroke and finishing third in 100m backstroke and 400m individual medley. Second place went to ROBIN CORSIGLIA in 100m breaststroke and WENDY HOGG in 100m backstroke. JOHANNA MALLOY and JAY TAPP finished third in 100m freestyle and 100m backstroke respectively.

WOMEN’S INTERNATIONAL SWIMMING COMPETITION

Providence, Rhode Island, January

Winner in 200 yd backstroke was CHERYL GIBSON. Third place in 400 yd. freestyle relay went to the Canadian team of GIBSON, VAL MEE, GAIL AMUNDRUD, and SARAH MCDONALD.

CATHOLIC YOUTH INDOOR GAMES

Baltimore, January

In the outstanding Canadian track performance of recent years, GREG JOY set a new world indoor record of 7’7″ in high jump. PATTY LOVEROCK sped to a new world mark in the 60 yd. sprint with a time of 6.78 seconds. Silver medals went to DEBBIE BRILL in high jump and BRUCE SIMPSON in pole vault. GLENN BOGUE took third in the 300 yd. event.

DALVIT TROPHY RACES

Italy, January

GAETAN BOUCHER emerged as all round winner and set Canadian records in 500m and 1000m speedskating events.

F.I.S. CROSS COUNTRY SKIING

Sweden, January

The national women’s team of SHIRLEY FIRTH, ESTHER MILLER, and JOAN GROOTHUYSEN placed first, second, and third respectively in 6 km. and won the 3 x 5 km. relay. MILLER won both the 8 km. and 10 km. events with FIRTH taking second in these races. GROOTHUYSEN wound up in third in 6 km.

ALPINE SKI EVENTS

December, January

The outstanding Canadian performer in FIS and Europa Cup competitions was PETER MONOD who won three giant slalom races and one slalom event.

Berlin Est, décembre

CHERYL GIBSON se maintint en tête de la délégation canadienne, à cette importante compétition internationale. Elle remporta le 200 m. dos, et se classa troisième au 100 m. dos et au 400 m. 4-nages. ROBIN CORSIGLIA, au 100 m. brasse et WENDY HOGG au 100 m. dos terminèrent en deuxième position, alors que JOHANNA MALLOY et JAY TAPP se méritaient une troisième place en 100 m. style libre et au 100 m. dos respectivement.

CHERYL GIBSON remporta le 200 v. dos, et l’équipe canadienne, composée de CHERYL GIBSON, VAL MEE, GAIL AMUNRUD et SARAH MCDONALD se plaça troisième au relai 400 v. style libre.

GREG JOY a établi un nouveau record mondial de saut en hauteur, en salle, par un saut de 7′ 7″. Cette performance canadienne se classe parmi les plus remarquables en athlétisme au cours des dernières années. PATTY LOVEROCK courut le 60 v. sprint en un temps de 6.78 secondes, améliorant la marque mondiale. DEBBIE BRILL, au saut en hauteur, et BRUCE SIMPSON, au saut à la perche se méritèrent des médailles d’argent, et GLENN BOGUE prit la troisième place au 300 v.

GAETAN BOUCHER remporta toutes les épreuves et établit de nouveaux records canadiens au 500 m et au 1000 m dans le patinage de vitesse.

Suède—janvier

Les Canadiennes SHIRLEY FIRTH, ESTHER MILLER et JOAN GROOTHUYSEN se classèrent première, seconde et troisième respectivement, au 6 km. et remportèrent le relai 3 x 5 km. Aux épreuves de 8 km. et 10 km.. MILLER et FIRTH terminèrent première et deuxième, et JOAN GROOTHUYSEN prit la troisième place au 6 km.

Décembre et janvier

En compétitions F.I.S. et pour la Coupe d’Europe, les meilleurs résultats obtenus par un Canadien ont été enregistrés par PETER MONOD, qui remporta trois épreuves de slalom géant, et un slalom.
